Investment Manager BIVF Europe

On-site Ingelheim, Germany

The Position

As Investment Manager within Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund (BIVF), you will identify, evaluate, execute and manage equity investments in innovative therapeutic biotech and selected digital healthcare companies. You will create strategic options for Boehringer Ingelheim by accessing external innovation, with particular emphasis on discovery- and early-development-stage opportunities addressing high unmet medical needs.
As an active member of the European investment team, you will work closely with the Head of BIVF Europe, the global BIVF team, internal scientific and business leaders, entrepreneurs, co-investors and other external partners. The role combines investment judgment, scientific depth, transaction execution, portfolio governance and ecosystem building.
The position is based in Ingelheim and requires at least 50% on-site presence.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Contribute to BIVF’s investment strategy and thematic priorities, informed by emerging scientific, technology, market and financing trends.
  • Proactively source high-quality opportunities through relationships with entrepreneurs, biotech executives, academics, venture investors, technology transfer offices and other innovation partners.
  • Lead the scientific, strategic, commercial and financial assessment of potential investments, including company, asset, market, competitive, financing and exit considerations.
  • Build and coordinate cross-functional due diligence teams; translate findings into clear investment theses, key risks, value-creation plans and recommendations for the Investment Committee.
  • Develop financing strategies and financial models; assess capitalization, ownership, dilution, syndicate composition and future funding needs; negotiate term sheets, governance rights and transaction documentation.
  • Prepare high-quality investment papers and present opportunities and recommendations to senior stakeholders and the Investment Committee.
  • Actively manage portfolio companies, including serving as Board Director or Board Observer where appropriate, and support strategy, financing, organizational development, partnering and exit planning.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and risks, support follow-on and business development decisions, connect companies with relevant Boehringer Ingelheim expertise, and represent BIVF as a trusted, value-adding syndicate partner while maintaining rigorous governance, compliance and professional standards.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree, preferably a PhD or MD, in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, bioengineering, medicine or a related discipline, combined with a strong understanding of pharmaceutical drug discovery and development.
  • Strong therapeutic biotech judgment, including the ability to assess scientific quality, target selection, molecule design, translational relevance, development risk, unmet medical need, competitive positioning and value inflection points across indications.
  • Several years of hands-on venture capital experience in therapeutic biotech or life sciences, with direct involvement in sourcing, due diligence, transaction execution and oversight of company leadership. This is not an entry-level venture capital role.
  • Established network among European life-science investors, entrepreneurs, biotech executives and innovation stakeholders, with demonstrated ability to originate opportunities and build high-quality syndicates.
  • Demonstrated transaction and analytical capabilities, including evaluation of business plans and financing strategies, financial and ownership analysis, investment structuring, and negotiation with companies and co-investors.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary diligence teams, influence senior stakeholders and communicate complex scientific and investment topics clearly and credibly.
  • Experience working with venture-backed boards, founders or management teams; Board Director or Board Observer experience, company creation, incubation or management-team building is advantageous.
  • Fluency in English and willingness to travel regularly across Europe and internationally; experience in BD&L, external innovation, strategic partnering or alliance transactions is advantageous.
