Veterinary Surgery Resident - Greencross Vet Hospital (GVH)
Company Description
Small Animal Surgery Residency – Three-Year ANZCVS Fellowship Training Program
Exceptional surgical experience. Dedicated mentorship. Protected teaching time.
Greencross Veterinary Hospital (GVH) is seeking a motivated veterinarian for a three-year Small Animal Surgery Residency, structured around the Fellowship requirements of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS).
We believe developing an excellent specialist surgeon requires more than a high surgical caseload. It requires dedicated mentorship, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a hospital genuinely committed to structured learning.
Why train at GVH?
University Teaching Environment
Located at the University of Melbourne's Werribee campus, GVH combines the educational culture of a university teaching hospital with the varied and challenging caseload of a busy specialist referral centre.
Dedicated Surgical Mentorship
Train alongside two specialist small animal surgeons, gaining supervised experience across a broad range of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurological and emergency surgical cases, with progressively increasing responsibility.
Exceptional Multidisciplinary Support
Work collaboratively with specialists in Anaesthesia, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology and Diagnostic Imaging, supported by a dedicated 24-hour Emergency and Critical Care department.
Advanced Facilities
Access to high-field 3T MRI, 128-slice CT, fluoroscopy, modern surgical theatres and intensive care facilities supports the investigation and management of complex surgical cases.
Protected Teaching Time (within the working week)
Education is central to our residency, not simply an after-hours expectation. Our established learning framework includes:
- Weekly multidisciplinary case rounds and regular journal club, with protected time during working hours.
- Direct surgical mentorship, clinical discussion, and constructive feedback.
- Opportunities to teach University of Melbourne veterinary students.
- Support for research, presentations and publications required for Fellowship training.
Your Fellowship Pathway
The residency follows the ANZCVS Small Animal Surgery Fellowship training framework. A College-approved Training Program Document will govern the resident's progression through a structured program of supervised surgical training, multidisciplinary rotations, externships, research, scholarly activity, and formal progress reviews to ensure Fellowship requirements are met.
Formal training arrangements are subject to College approval.
Who should apply?
- We welcome veterinarians with strong clinical foundations, enthusiasm for surgery, and a commitment to specialist training.
- Previous internship or referral experience is highly regarded.
- ANZCVS Membership and research experience are advantageous but not essential for application.
- Applicants must be eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria.
