Description of Work

This position is responsible for skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of facilities motor vehicle fleet and equipment. Providing
inspection and repair services to motor vehicles, student transportation buses, support services vehicles, grounds care vehicles, emergency generators, and diesel engine life safety fire pumps are key job duties.

This position also provides interaction, training, supervision, and coordination skills to This position is also required to give general assistance to other staff as needed to meet school property and program needs.

Recruitment Salary Range:
$42,000 to $47,000 - Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students, ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two), with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894, the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind education.

North Carolina School for the Deaf operates per the academic calendar, from August to May, with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday afternoons. In general, support services and administration operate year-round.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

The Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician I – NCSD performs skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of various vehicles and equipment for the State of North Carolina, specifically within the North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD). This role ensures the safe and efficient operation of the institution's fleet and machinery.

Job Responsibilities:

* Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on a wide range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, vans, and buses.
* Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks.
* Execute complex repairs on engines, transmissions, differentials, braking systems, steering systems, and hydraulic systems.
* Repair and maintain various types of groundskeeping, custodial, and kitchen equipment, including mowers, tractors, floor scrubbers, and specialized kitchen appliances.
* Utilize diagnostic tools and software to identify and resolve vehicle and equipment malfunctions.
* Order and maintain an inventory of parts and supplies necessary for repairs and maintenance.
* Document all work performed, including parts used and labor hours, accurately and completely.
* Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures, maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
* Communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff regarding repair status and potential issues.
* May be required to provide roadside assistance or emergency repairs as needed.

Management Preferences:

* Proficient knowledge of automotive and equipment mechanics, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems.
* Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment effectively.
* Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair diagrams.
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
* Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and work in various weather conditions.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and diagnostic software.
* Preferred: ASE certifications or specialized training in specific vehicle or equipment types.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirement:


* High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in vehicle or equipment repair and maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.


Necessary Special Requirements

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.


Pursuant to House Bill 11, all employees, hired in classified (and certified) positions on or after July 1, 2024, are employed pursuant to Chapter 115C of the General Statutes. This includes any transfers to NCSD from another state agency who are currently considered Chapter 126 (SPA) employe es.

Recruitment Salary Range $42,000 to $47,000 - Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.


This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.


Supplemental Information:

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.  Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
