Thesis worker - Innovative Material Systems for Truck Components
Introduction
A thesis project is an excellent opportunity to get to know Traton and build relationships for the future. Many of today’s employees began their Traton careers with a degree project.
Traton develops transport solutions for a changing world. Within Traton R&D we work with the development of materials and components for future vehicles. New material systems can create opportunities for improved product performance, resource efficiency and manufacturing. Before they can be used in future products, their potential, limitations and level of maturity need to be understood.
Background
Several innovative material systems are being considered for future truck components. These include bio-based materials with a clear sustainability focus, innovative concept based on metal, and other polymeric materials including composites. The considered material systems vary in maturity, available data and readiness for industrial use. To assess their potential, they need to be evaluated against relevant product requirements as well as aspects such as design, manufacturing, testing, customer value and business potential.
We are looking for students who would like to contribute to this work. The ambition is to have several thesis projects running in parallel, with students collaborating while addressing different questions. Each thesis project can be carried out individually or by a pair of two students. The scope can be shaped around the students education, interests and skills.
Objective
The objective is to assess the potential of selected material systems for future truck components and develop concepts that meet relevant product requirements.
Together with your supervisors, you will define a focused research question and project scope. Depending on your interests, the work may include concept development, product design, simulation, technical evaluation, testing, manufacturing considerations, environmental aspects or an assessment of business and customer value.
Job Description
Together with your supervisors, you will define a focused research question and project scope. Depending on the chosen focus, the thesis work may include:
- Reviewing relevant research, technologies and product requirements
- Developing and assessing product concepts for truck components
- Comparing material properties, sustainability and technical maturity
- Evaluating manufacturing processes and production feasibility
- Testing and evaluating the properties and performance of surface treatments for selected material systems
- Planning or carrying out material, component or manufacturing tests and evaluating performance
- Assessing customer value, product benefits, business potential and implementation opportunities
- Collaborating with students working on related thesis topics
- Presenting results and recommendations for further development
These are examples, and the final scope will be agreed with the student and supervisors. If any of these research questions, or another question you would like to explore related to this project, aligns with your interests, we encourage you to apply for this thesis opportunity.
Education programme and focus
Master’s student in product development, industrial design, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering and management, or a related field.
We are interested in students with different academic backgrounds. A strong interest in product development, materials, coatings, manufacturing, testing, business or customer value is important. Good collaboration skills are required, as the thesis projects are expected to work together and share relevant findings.
Number of studentsSeveral students may be recruited for parallel thesis projects. Each thesis project can be completed by one student or by a pair of two students.
Start date and durationTo be agreed. The project is expected to correspond to a 30 hp master’s thesis.
