Job Overview

Impact Advisors is seeking an experienced Coding Optimization and Automation Consultant to help healthcare organizations build high-performing coding operations: more automated, better structured, and measurably more productive and accurate. As clients increasingly look to automate coding and modernize how their coding departments operate, this role partners with coding, HIM, and revenue cycle leaders to establish the right structure, training, QA, and performance measurement, and to apply Epic and automation technology to reduce manual work and improve results. The ideal candidate has led or substantially shaped a coding department or coding operations, has a track record of measurable improvement, and can work across both hospital and professional coding. Travel of up to 80% may be required, depending on the engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Operating model and work design: Assess and redesign coding department structure, roles, and work allocation so capacity, skill sets, and workload line up, and coding teams run efficiently with clear ownership.
  • Automation and technology enablement: Identify and implement automation opportunities, including Epic coding functionality, CAC/autonomous coding, and AI-enabled tools. Define scope, workflows, and success measures.
  • Epic workflow optimization: Partner with client operations and Epic IT teams to align Epic with operational workflows, including workqueue design, routing and assignment rules, and claim edits.
  • Coding quality assurance: Build or optimize coding QA programs, including audit approach, sampling, scoring, feedback loops, and corrective action for both facility and professional coding.
  • Training and education: Develop coder onboarding, ongoing education, and competency programs, as well as scalable provider education using in-person, virtual, and self-service formats.
  • Performance measurement and accountability: Establish coding KPIs and reporting for productivity, accuracy, backlog, DNFB, coding-related denials, and turnaround time. Give leaders clear visibility into performance and the data to act on it.
  • Client leadership: Serve as a trusted advisor to client coding and revenue cycle leaders, lead workstreams, manage deliverables, and communicate progress, risks, and results to executive stakeholders.

Engagements may include work such as:

  • Dividing production coding, denials, and claim edit work across staff with coding expertise
  • Implementing Epic’s coding-related AI tools
  • Optimizing Epic hospital simple visit coding
  • Automating level-of-service (LOS) coding and charging for ambulatory and ED settings
  • Designing ambulatory provider E/M coding education and QA programs at scale

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in healthcare coding, HIM, coding operations, revenue integrity, or revenue cycle management.
  • Experience leading or substantially shaping a coding department or coding operations, either in a provider organization or as a consultant.
  • Hospital and professional coding experience. Strength on both sides is ideal, but deep expertise on one side with working knowledge of the other will be considered.
  • Strong working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and E/M coding.
  • Proven experience using technology or automation to improve coding processes. This does not have to include the latest AI tools.
  • Hands-on experience building or optimizing coding QA programs, coder and provider education, and productivity standards.
  • Demonstrated, measurable results, such as productivity gains, backlog or DNFB reduction, accuracy improvement, or increased automation rates.
  • Experience optimizing coding workflows in Epic, including workqueues, rules, and related operational workflows. Epic certification is not required.
  • Experience with Solventum (formerly 3M) or similar coding and CDI technology preferred.
  • Coding credential (CCS, CPC, RHIA, RHIT, or similar) preferred.
  • Healthcare consulting experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and executive presence. Able to lead workstreams and manage multiple priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Ability to travel up to 80%, depending on engagement needs.
