Software Development Intern
Job Summary:
As a Software Development Intern, you'll work alongside engineers and mentors to design, build, test, and ship software as part of our dynamic team at CWAN. You'll join our Beacon Core Engineering team, which builds a large part of Beacon Cloud, sitting just above the platform abstraction layer.
The team builds the developer tools (SDLC) we offer to clients and use internally, including:
- Developer experience: IDE tooling with AI agent integration, code review, test frameworks, and release processes
- Runtime execution: batch and supercomputer (HPC) schedulers, containerization
- Shared libraries: including the dependency-graph and deal-model libraries used by the financial layer, by clients, and internally
You'll gain hands-on experience building and operating cloud-native systems on AWS and Azure, and work with AI agents that speed up development — both for our own team and for the clients we help adopt them safely.
Responsibilities
- Learn the team's tools, coding standards, and development workflow (Git, ticketing, CI/CD) with mentor support.
- Collaborate across the software development lifecycle: requirements, design, implementation, testing, and release.
- Use AI agents to accelerate your own development work, and help advise clients and internal teams on using them safely.
- Implement well-scoped features and bug fixes, following established patterns and best practices.
- Build and maintain automated tests (unit and/or integration) and verify changes meet acceptance criteria.
- Participate in design and code review discussions; communicate tradeoffs around performance, reliability, security, and maintainability.
- Document technical changes and operational notes to support maintainability and troubleshooting.
Required Skills
- Coursework or project experience with an object-oriented language (e.g., Python, C++, Rust).
- Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively on a team.
- Openness to feedback and willingness to learn quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Git and pull request workflows; familiarity with CI/CD.
- Exposure to backend frameworks and APIs (e.g., REST/JSON).
- Knowledge of AI coding assistant tools.
- Familiarity with testing tools and basic debugging practices.
- Experience with TypeScript or JavaScript is a plus.
Education and Experience:
- Current junior-level students pursuing a four-year degree in Computer Science or related field; freshmen, sophomores, and seniors will not be considered.
