Description of Work

The Nurse Supervisor performs supervisory functions for a Division or specialty nursing unit, providing oversight of all aspects of nursing services rendered to physically and mentally disabled persons to foster optimal health and is responsible for quality assurance audits, continuously monitoring the care provided on all shifts, identifying nursing training needs and developing approaches to solving problems, and communicates closely with the Division Director and Home Manager/QDDP’s in each home and with supervisors in other departments as the need arises, and may serve on task forces and committees as requested. Oversees implementation of established policies/procedures, ICF/IID Regulations, medical/nursing policies and procedures and the NC Nurse Practice Act to provide high quality nursing care for individuals, and exercises a high level of independent clinical decision making. Provides training and mentoring functions for their individual area of assignment, reviews work of assigned staff, and provides input to the Director of Nursing or a higher level Nurse Supervisor for development of policy and procedures. Assists in solving professional, administrative and supervisory problems and employee relations issues, and perform limited budgetary functions.

This Nurse Supervisor ensures provision of competent nursing care to all residents living in the homes in the area on all shifts and may occasionally provide weekend supervision. Supervises RNs and LPNs assigned to the area and provides health care instruction to Healthcare Technicians as indicated. Acts as a liaison between care providers to assure that problems are resolved as rapidly as possible so continuity of care is provided.

Salary Range: $77,076.00 - $127,175.00

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred.


  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing theory, techniques, practices, and the organization and operation of the nursing program in the area of assignment and ability to mentor new supervisors.
  • Considerable knowledge of management and supervisory methods, practice, and procedures, knowledge of the trends and methods of nursing education.
  • Ability to independently implement the nursing process, direct and carry out prescribed medical treatments, ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of healthcare staff, anticipate, recognize, and respond appropriately to potential problematic situations.
  • Advise and provide input to management regarding strategic plan, development of policies and procedures, and global organizational issues.
  • Effectively communicate information, coach, and counsel employees, prepare, and maintain reports of individual activity and progress, address performance improvement issues and evaluate the quality of nursing services delivered and institute methods of improving or maintaining established standards of nursing care.

Hours: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM


This position is designated as mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.


Physical requirements for this position include passing CPR and CPI.


Must have the ability to respond to emergencies.


*A Sign-on bonus of $10,000.00 may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting, contingent on the 2025-2026 Budget Approval.


*Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

To qualify for the Sign-on Bonus, a newly hired permanent full-time or permanent part-time employee must work 30 to 40 hours per week to be eligible. Those who are eligible and working less than 40 hours a week will receive a prorated rate.


An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

  • The employee has held a position in the North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system, within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date)
  • The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency
  • DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and three years of nursing experience, including one year of experience in a Nurse Supervisor capacity.
