Description of Work
Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.Position serves as a County Maintenance Engineer for Mecklenburg County. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising and directing various aspects of Highway Maintenance operations including DOT staff and purchase order contract construction. Respond to inquiries from the public, DOT Management, Media, etc., regarding DOT policies and procedures, division projects, plans and proposed work. Position has Emergency Call Back status and must be able to respond to Highway emergencies and work during inclement weather events. Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of all field and office engineering instruments; ability to understand, explain and administer contracts; ability to interpret plans, provisions and specifications; ability to interpret policies and regulations; and the ability to establish working relationship between the department and citizens.
Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle to perform essential job duties. These responsibilities include but are not limited to emergency response, inclement weather, attending meetings, training sessions, and monitoring activities of field maintenance operations.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade: NC21 Salary Range: $70,627 - $137,724
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews
- Experience in the use of professional engineering skills and knowledge to troubleshoot and solve highway maintenance problems
- Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects
- Experience in leading meetings with employees, citizens and public officials to conducting investigations and resolveing various issues
- Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification:
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
