Lead Medical Lab Scientist

Position Summary 

  • Responsible for collecting, processing, and performing testing of patient specimens.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (or Associates Degree for grandfathered personnel)

Licenses and Certification

•           MLS (ASCP) or equivalent certification required


Experience and Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory.
  • Leadership and technical expertise.

Physical Activities 

  • Intermittent hand manipulation required
  • Intermittent lifting and carrying of 50 pounds 

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Supports and communicates Laboratory initiatives and philosophies.
  • Perform routine waived, moderately, and high complex testing.
  • Collects, Processes and Receives specimens (including blood, urine, fecal, body fluid) to be analyzed in all departments of the clinical laboratory (listed above).
  • Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens of analysis of all age ranges.
  • Prepare samples for testing and send out to reference laboratories
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and stock supplies.
  • Performs complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles under direct supervision per CLIA requirements.
  • Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning results and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and instrument maintenance.
  • Participate in training programs.
  • Participate in accreditation activities.
  • Participate in comparison studies and validation of new equipment.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving instrument failures.
  • Oversee quality control programs and proficiency testing.
  • Work closely with supervisors on laboratory operations.
  • Assist with regulatory compliance and inspections.
  • Serve as a mentor to fellow coworkers.
  • Provide continuing education for staff.
  • Assist in writing and revising laboratory procedures.
  • Supervise daily operations and serve as a key operator for testing platforms.
  • Lead troubleshooting and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to CAP, CLIA, and hospital regulations.
  • Collaborate with leadership on new testing implementation.
  • Assist in maintaining accreditation and compliance documentation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more lab disciplines.
  • Complete department-required continuing education annually
