Overview
AtkinsRealis is hiring highly skilled and experienced Lead Mechanical Design Engineer – Plant Items & GD&T to join our team. This person will be conducting a mix of functions that span from internal process improvements to supporting project delivery. The primary responsibility of this role will be to design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems using SolidWorks, ensuring accuracy, functionality, and manufacturability. The successful candidate should be a people, process, tool (in that order) focused individual whose job it will be to ensure our project delivery teams adhere to common standards and the latest design delivery techniques. The candidate will also actively support project teams on proposal and project delivery tasks.
The role will also act as the technical authority for geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) associated with plant items, providing technical direction, checking and assurance for modelling and manufacturing definition activities.
Your Role
- Significant hands-on expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), with the ability to define, interpret, review, and approve dimensional and geometrical requirements for plant items and mechanical components.
- Advanced working knowledge of BS 8888 and the associated ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) framework, or relevant North American equivalents such as ASME Y14.5, subject to applicable client requirements.
- Act as the technical lead and controlling authority for GD&T within the design team, establishing the tolerancing strategy and ensuring that 3D models, manufacturing drawings, and product definitions clearly communicate design intent.
- Provide technical governance and independent checking of datum schemes, feature control frames, form, orientation, location, profile and runout controls, material-condition principles, limits and fits, and tolerance stack-ups.
- Ensure GD&T requirements are functionally justified and compatible with assembly, manufacturability, inspection, interchangeability, and quality requirements.
- Lead and mentor designers/engineers on GD&T application, resolve complex tolerancing issues, and interface with engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and client stakeholders where required.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks software, including advanced features such as surfacing, sheet metal, and assemblies.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with design validation techniques, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a plus.
- Ability to read & interpret engineering drawings & specifications.
- Identify, interpret, and apply required industry/ client/ internal CAD/BIM standards to ensure that our finished product is Project, Client compliance.

About You
- Bachelor's degree/Diploma in Mechanical engineering or equivalent technical discipline with 10+ years’ experience in the relevant fields.
- Minimum 10+ years of relevant mechanical design experience, including substantial practical application of GD&T on complex mechanical/plant items; the candidate should be capable of leading and approving GD&T-related work.
- Demonstrable experience applying BS 8888 / ISO GPS and/or ASME Y14.5 on production engineering drawings and 3D model-based product definitions.
- Ability to perform or review tolerance stack-up analyses and translate functional/assembly requirements into appropriate dimensional and geometrical controls.
- Previous experience in nuclear, power, heavy engineering, precision equipment, or similarly controlled design environments is preferred; CANDU project experience is advantageous.
