Why are we hiring?
Well, we’re growing and thriving. So, we need smart, talented, and humble people who share our values to join us as we disrupt the home security space and relentlessly pursue our mission of keeping Every Home Secure.
The Job
SimpliSafe is looking for an Industrial Designer to help design the next generation of home security products. Working closely with Design Leads, you will understand our customers, learn their painpoints, and then transform user needs into compelling new concepts and bring innovative physical products from early ideation to mass production. This role is ideal for a creative, detail orientated and problem solving designer who excels at early-stage concepting, rapid hands-on prototyping, and preserving design intent through execution.
What you’ll do
- Explore and translate user needs and insights into compelling product concepts, forms, and experiences.
- Build quick, scrappy physical prototypes and foam models to rapidly test ideas, validate ergonomic choices, and gather user feedback.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, User Research, and UX to guide Industrial Design directions from early exploration to execution.
- Sketch collaboratively to explore form, CMF (Color, Material, and Finish), and user interactions, effectively communicating solutions across teams.
- Create detailed CAD models and high-quality 3D renderings to convey design intent and functional vision clearly.
- Produce comprehensive design documentation including detailed drawings, CMF specifications, and production artwork, and communicate ongoing DFM issues through part review documents to clearly convey design intent.
- Partner with Engineering and external manufacturing partners to adapt, refine, and maintain design integrity through production.
- Contribute to and evolve SimpliSafe’s Design Language System (DLS), ensuring hardware decisions align across the product ecosystem.
What you’ll need to be successful
- A strong digital portfolio demonstrating your end-to-end design process, highlighting early concepting, user-centered problem solving, form development, and scrappy prototyping.
- Strong storytelling capabilities, and a collaborative, growth-oriented mindset.
- A strong eye for detail and a deep appreciation for aesthetics.
- Excellent ideation, form-giving, CAD & digital prototyping skills
- Strong hand and digital sketching skills to rapidly generate, iterate, and communicate aesthetic and functional ideas.
- Passion for rapid, scrappy physical prototyping (paper, foam, 3D printing) to test concepts quickly with users and validate design direction.
- High proficiency in 3D CAD modeling to build precise surface geometries (KeyShot, V-Ray)
- Expertise in 3D rendering and visualization to produce compelling presentation-quality visuals (KeyShot, V-Ray)
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and CMF specification documentation.
- Ability to collaborate constructively with mechanical/electrical engineering and manufacturing partners to navigate trade-offs while upholding design intent.
- Experience working within or contributing to a hardware Design Language System.
Experience
- 3-6 years of professional hardware design experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design (or equivalent).
- Proven track record of designing high-quality consumer products that integrate physical and digital components.
- Location: Boston, Massachusetts.
- Onsite Requirement: Strong preference for onsite collaboration Tuesday through Thursday.
What Values You’ll Share
- Customer Obsessed - Building deep empathy for our customers, putting them at the core of our work, and developing strong, long-term relationships with them.
