Director & Actuary, Corporate Development

On-site Toronto, Canada full time

We are seeking a Director & Actuary to join Corporate Development, a highly dynamic team that partners across Manulife to evaluate and execute mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and other major strategic initiatives. The role combines actuarial and financial analysis with hands-on transaction execution, senior-level communication and cross-functional collaboration.

The opportunity

Corporate Development manages transactions on an end-to-end basis, including opportunity assessment, valuation, due diligence, deal structuring, negotiations, internal approvals, integration planning, closing and post-closing monitoring. The team acts as a catalyst, enabler and partner to help Manulife’s businesses execute their strategies through M&A as a complement to organic growth, while applying a disciplined process that identifies and manages key transaction risks.

Position responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed company- and industry-specific research, including competitor and precedent transaction analysis and assessment of emerging competitive, capital, regulatory and accounting developments.
  • Prepare clear, concise reports and executive-ready presentations on industry, strategic and transaction-related topics.
  • Support the valuation of potential transactions, including reviewing calculations and analyzing period-over-period movements in capital, reserves, earnings projections and other transaction metrics.
  • Help manage transactions from initial evaluation through due diligence, negotiations, internal approvals and closing.
  • Partner with actuarial, finance, business and other functional teams to ensure valuation assumptions are appropriate and consistent with Manulife standards.
  • Assess the financial and strategic impact of potential transactions and strategic initiatives on Manulife’s operations, goals and objectives.
  • Communicate analytical conclusions and recommendations effectively in both written materials and oral presentations.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented environment and support multiple concurrent priorities in a fast-moving setting.

Required qualifications

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and/or Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA), with 3+ years of progressive experience.
  • Strong analytical judgment, including the ability to interpret results, identify issues and coordinate timely, practical resolutions.
  • Ability to develop and assess pro forma financial statements on both a standalone and consolidated basis.
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, actuarial and valuation concepts, and transaction-related capital and reserve considerations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and flexibility to manage and prioritize several projects at the same time.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and levels of the organization.
  • Proactive and self-directed, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team of professionals.
  • Excellent written and visual presentation skills, particularly in Microsoft PowerPoint.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in corporate development, transaction advisory, actuarial finance, valuation, capital management or a related field.
  • Knowledge of insurance industry financial metrics, accounting standards, regulatory capital frameworks and performance evaluation tools.
  • Experience supporting due diligence, transaction modeling, deal structuring or integration planning.

What you bring

  • An ownership mindset and sound judgment when working through complex or ambiguous issues.
  • The ability to synthesize detailed actuarial, financial and strategic information into decision-useful insights.
  • A collaborative approach and confidence engaging with colleagues across businesses, functions and geographies.
  • High standards for accuracy, clarity and execution.

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.
  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.
  • As part of our global team, we’ll support you in shaping the future you want to see.
