Zarpac is a leading global provider of packaging line engineering, integration, and productivity solutions. We are currently seeking a Controls Engineer to join our team in Oakville.
This role is ideal for an experienced automation professional who enjoys developing complete controls solutions and seeing their designs come to life in complex automated packaging environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for controls system development, electrical design support, system integration, and commissioning activities for packaging and material handling projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop complete controls and automation solutions for packaging and material handling systems.
- Design, program, test, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI applications using Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and related automation platforms.
- Develop control system architecture and software solutions that meet customer requirements and project specifications.
- Own the controls portion of assigned projects from concept through commissioning and customer acceptance.
- Configure and integrate industrial networks, robotics, servo systems, VFDs, vision systems, and safety control systems.
- Develop and maintain functional specifications, I/O lists, network architecture documentation, software standards, and operating sequences.
- Review customer requirements, functional specifications, and vendor documentation to develop effective automation solutions.
- Participate in electrical design activities, including schematic development, panel layouts, component selection, and control panel reviews.
- Support the design and integration of power distribution systems, MCCs, PDPs, field devices, and control hardware as required.
- Conduct factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
- Diagnose and resolve controls, automation, and system integration issues during machine build, startup, and production support phases.
- Collaborate with project managers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, manufacturing teams, and customers throughout project execution.
- Contribute to controls standards, design improvements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical support to manufacturing, field service, and customer teams as required.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of Controls Engineering experience in industrial automation, packaging machinery, manufacturing, or system integration environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong PLC programming experience with Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens platforms.
- Experience developing HMI applications using FactoryTalk, Ignition, WinCC, or similar software.
- Experience with industrial communication networks and automation system integration.
- Experience commissioning and troubleshooting industrial automation systems.
- Working knowledge of electrical schematics, control panel design, and industrial power distribution concepts.
- Experience with robotics, servo systems, VFDs, machine safety systems, and instrumentation is preferred.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical or similar design software.
- Knowledge of North American electrical and machine safety standards.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
- Experience in packaging machinery, OEM equipment manufacturing, or automated production systems is preferred.
- P.Eng. designation is an asset but not required.

Compensation
The base salary for this role is $100,000 – $125,000 CAD.
Travel Requirement
Approximately 20-30% travel, primarily to customer sites in the U.S. Occasional international travel required.
