Job Description Summary The Chief Software Architect, Patient Care Solutions (PCS) Digital, is responsible for defining and governing the end-to-end technology strategy, architecture roadmap, and design standards for PCS Digital applications. The role provides technical leadership across applications that support mission-important and mission-support clinical and service workflows across the PCS ecosystem.
The Chief Software Architect leads through technical authority, architecture governance, and cross-functional influence. The role partners closely with the PCS Chief Engineer and leaders across Product, Engineering, Cybersecurity, Quality, Regulatory and Service to align architecture decisions with customer needs, patient safety, cybersecurity, regulatory expectations, lifecycle support, and cost-effective execution. Key Responsibilities
- Define and own the technology strategy and architecture roadmap for PCS Digital applications.
- Establish architecture standards and guardrails across data, applications, deployment, cybersecurity, reliability, observability, lifecycle management, and operational readiness.
- Drive common architecture patterns and reusable solutions that improve scalability, maintainability, serviceability, security, and cost efficiency.
- Define architecture principles for resiliency, disaster recovery, elasticity, performance, and infrastructure cost management.
- Drive rigorous technical design reviews across PCS Digital, ensuring disciplined assessment of trade-offs related to safety, reliability, cybersecurity, cost, schedule, serviceability, and long-term maintainability.
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to translate clinical workflows, customer constraints, product strategy, and business needs into practical architecture decisions.
- Engage internal platforms and external partners to realize the architecture vision and support product lifecycle needs.
- Serve as a senior technical authority for complex application issues, architecture risks, and modernization decisions.
- Identify and advance technologies that strengthen PCS Digital architecture and enable future capabilities.
- Mentor principal architects, software architects, lead system designers, and senior technical leaders to strengthen technical depth and execution consistency.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related STEM field.
- 15+ years of relevant technical experience in software, systems, cloud, platform or distributed application architecture.
- Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated technical leadership in healthcare, life science, and/or similar regulated industry or software environment.
- Experience defining technical strategy, architecture roadmaps, standards, and governance for complex software or digital platforms.
- Experience with cloud-native architecture, data platforms, integration patterns, observability, cybersecurity, reliability, performance, and lifecycle management.
- Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders without direct reporting authority.
- Ability to translate customer, clinical, product, service, cybersecurity, regulatory, and business needs into architecture decisions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to engineering teams, senior leaders, product stakeholders, and external partners.
- Track record of solving complex technical problems and providing guidance to senior engineers, architects, and cross-functional teams.
- Experience working with global, distributed teams.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
Desired Characteristics
- Experience architecting or operating solutions on AWS or other major cloud platforms.
- Experience modernizing legacy products into cloud, hybrid, or SaaS operating models.
- Knowledge of enterprise architecture practices, platform engineering, DevSecOps, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, and FinOps.
- Understanding of data analytics, machine learning, event-driven architecture, interoperability, and enterprise integration patterns.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to connect technology choices to customer outcomes, product strategy, and financial impact.
- Ability to influence enterprise-level decisions, simplify ambiguity, and build alignment across technical and business stakeholders.
- Systems thinker with strong judgment, clear communication, ownership mindset, and the ability to work effectively in a team or independently.
