Position Duties
The Department of Forensic Science at Loyola University Maryland (LUM) invites applications for a full-time tenure track position as an Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2027. We are looking for a candidate committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education at a dynamic liberal arts university. The department is especially interested in outstanding candidates who demonstrate the ability to develop and teach new and existing undergraduate and graduate courses in content areas specific to our undergraduate programs in forensic science (BS and BA) and two graduate programs (MS) in Biological Forensics and Forensic Pattern Analysis. The successful candidate is also expected to develop a research program with the potential for extramural funding and that involves undergraduate and graduate students. Preference will be given to individuals who incorporate DNA analysis into their research program, which in turn, would allow contributions to the department’s newly launched Greyhound Center for Cold Case Investigations and to the strategic initiative of developing a Molecular Animal Diagnostics Laboratory. Ideally, the individual will be able to expand the department’s capabilities in laboratory instrumentation training and research, as well as be able to collaborate with other faculty in the department and in the Natural and Applied Sciences at Loyola.
Teaching contributions may include trace evidence, criminalistics, biological forensics, forensic microbiology/microbiomes, graduate and undergraduate DNA-based courses incorporating laboratory and instrumentation analysis typical of a forensic laboratory, the undergraduate foundation sequence, as well as non-major’s courses, and contribute to the department’s efforts to embed emerging forensic technology (i.e., FTiR, digital PCR, image analysis, laser scanning documentation) throughout the undergraduate and graduate curricula.
Strong candidates should possess an awareness of and interest in high impact practices in line with the mission of Jesuit higher education. Faculty development opportunities are also available, including startup funds for establishing a research program. We highly value the ability and motivation to collaborate with other faculty members, the provision of high-value experiences to our undergraduates and graduate students, and a commitment to “inspire students to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world.” Loyola’s work on behalf of diversity and inclusion spans the entire campus, and we welcome candidates who contribute to our stated goals of equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service.
Applications should include a cover letter, CV, teaching philosophy, statement of teaching interests, description of research program, and a list of three references. For full consideration, applications should be received by 11/15/2026.
Salary Range: $81,000 - $82,500
Required qualifications: Successful candidates should have earned a minimum of a Master's of Science in Forensic Science, Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related discipline. Ideal candidates should also have experience in conducting research in trace evidence, preferably with the incorporation of DNA methodologies and instrumentation.
Preferred qualifications: a PhD in in Forensic Science, Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related discipline and prior college teaching experience.
Final compensation offers are determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, job-related experience, internal equity, and alignment with organizational budget.
Successful candidates for any staff, faculty, or administrative position at Loyola University Maryland will be subject to a pre-employment background check.

University Description
Founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1852, Loyola University Maryland is a Jesuit, Catholic university and the first institution of higher learning in the United States to bear the name of the founder of the Society of Jesus, Saint Ignatius Loyola. The University inspires students to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world.
At Loyola, the ideals that have guided Jesuit universities for nearly 500 years—academic excellence, care for the whole person, service, justice, diversity, and integrity, among others—continue to mold the academic, social, and spiritual experiences we offer our roughly 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the programs we pursue, and the relationships we build with our surrounding communities. Loyola offers a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs through its three schools: the Sellinger School of Business and Management, the School of Education, and Loyola College, the University’s school of arts and sciences.
The benefits of Loyola’s Jesuit, liberal arts experience lead to a life-long approach of learning, questioning, and critical analysis that prepare our alumni for—and set them apart in—the workforce and the world.
The Wall Street Journal ranked Loyola No. 19 overall in the nation in its 2026 “Best Colleges” list. Loyola was also ranked No. 5 in the nation for career preparation, No. 22 in the nation for student experience, and No. 65 in the nation for impact on graduate salaries. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Loyola among the top 10 universities in the North Region for more than a decade. The Princeton Review named it one of the nation’s top institutions for undergraduate higher education and one of the best Mid-Atlantic colleges for 2027.
