SafetyWing review: Nomad Insurance Essential and Complete explained
SafetyWing sells insurance built for people who live and work on the move. It has two very different plans under one name: Essential, which is travel medical insurance for the unexpected, and Complete, which is full health insurance. This review explains both, with prices, limits and exclusions read from SafetyWing's own pages.

Our verdict
Nomad Insurance Essential is an affordable way to be covered for accidents and new, unexpected illness while you travel or live abroad, bought month by month and even after you have left home. It is not health insurance: routine care, existing conditions, mental health and cancer are excluded. If you have settled abroad and want real health cover, Nomad Insurance Complete is the plan to compare, at a much higher price and with a 12-month commitment. Read the home-country rules before you buy either.

Nomad Insurance Essential in detail
Essential pays for emergency and unexpected medical care: hospital stays, doctor visits for a new illness or injury, emergency dental up to USD 1,000, and medical evacuation up to USD 100,000 over your lifetime. It also covers some travel problems: lost luggage up to USD 500 per item and USD 3,000 per plan, and evacuation for political unrest up to USD 10,000 (SafetyWing). There is no deductible since the plan was updated (SafetyWing).
You can buy it after you have left home. If something happens in the first 72 hours, you must show it began after you bought the plan (SafetyWing).
Add-ons. Adventure sports cover up to USD 100,000, never above 6,000 metres and never for base jumping, heli-skiing or whitewater rafting; it can only be added to a new plan (SafetyWing). Electronics theft cover pays up to USD 1,000 per device and USD 3,000 per period, if you report the theft to the police within 24 hours, and the device's value falls by 2% a month (SafetyWing).
Cover in your home country
This is the rule people miss most. Under the Essential plan updated in February 2026, home-country cover is for emergencies only, starts only after the plan has been active for 90 days, and is limited: 30 days per visit in any rolling 90 days on a monthly plan (15 if your home is the US), or up to 90 days per visit and 179 days a year if you paid 364 days upfront (45 per visit if your home is the US) (SafetyWing). The Complete plan has no restrictions in your home country, except in the US, where it covers emergencies for up to 30 days, or six months with an add-on (SafetyWing).
What SafetyWing does not cover
- Pre-existing conditions. Both plans exclude them. Essential looks back 180 days; acute flare-ups can be covered after the first 28 days if treated within 24 hours. Chronic and congenital conditions are excluded (SafetyWing). Complete counts anything diagnosed or treated, or with symptoms in the last two years.
- On Essential: routine check-ups and vaccines, non-emergency dental, pregnancy except complications, mental health, cancer, cosmetic treatment, and incidents linked to alcohol or drugs (SafetyWing).
- Where you can go. Essential does not cover trips to Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Puerto Rico and parts of Ukraine, and residents of sanctioned countries cannot buy it (SafetyWing).
- Where you can live on Complete. Residents of some countries cannot buy Complete. SafetyWing's two lists of these countries differ, so check yours on its help centre before you apply (SafetyWing).
- Waiting periods on Complete. No general waiting period, 10 months for maternity (SafetyWing). Routine dental needs the dental add-on.
Who is behind SafetyWing?
SafetyWing designs and sells the plans. Essential is underwritten by SafetyWing Insurance I.I., an international insurer based in Puerto Rico, and administered by SafetyWing (Managing General Agent), Ltd in Turks and Caicos. On Complete, the travel part is underwritten by SafetyWing Insurance II and the health part by VUMI Group, I.I. (Puerto Rico), administered by VIP Administration Services LLC (SafetyWing). For US startups SafetyWing also sells Remote Health, an employer-sponsored plan on the Cigna network (SafetyWing).
How claims work
- Get treated and keep itemised invoices, receipts and the medical report. On Complete, ask for pre-approval for treatment above USD 500 in the listed categories, or the refund can be about 30% lower.
- File the claim in your SafetyWing dashboard. Documents in other languages do not need translating.
- Wait for the refund. SafetyWing says it takes up to 15 business days from submission to reimbursement (SafetyWing).
Is SafetyWing worth it? What users say
On Trustpilot SafetyWing had a score of 4.3 from 4,161 reviews on 8 October 2026: 74% five-star and 16% one-star, with replies to most negative reviews. The complaints repeat a few themes: claims refused as pre-existing conditions, repeated requests for documents, slow claims, small claims blocked for lack of a medical report, and the age limit of 69. Most of them come from the exclusions above, so read them before you buy.
Worth it if
- You travel or live abroad and want cover for the unexpected
- You want to pay monthly and buy after leaving home
- You are under 40 and healthy, where the price is lowest
Look elsewhere if
- You need cover for an existing condition
- You want routine care on a budget plan
- You spend long periods in your home country
Is USD 100,000 enough for medical evacuation? The cost of an air ambulance depends on the distance, the aircraft and the medical crew, and long-distance evacuations from remote places are the most expensive. Note that Essential's limit is per lifetime, not per trip. If you spend months far from good hospitals, compare plans with higher evacuation limits.

Frequently asked questions
How much does SafetyWing cost per month?
On 8 October 2026, Nomad Insurance Essential cost USD 62.72 per 4 weeks for the youngest adult age band, and Nomad Insurance Complete cost USD 177.50 per month for ages 18 to 39 with a 12-month commitment. Older age bands cost more.
Is SafetyWing real health insurance?
Nomad Insurance Essential is travel medical insurance for new, unexpected problems, not health insurance. Nomad Insurance Complete is full health insurance with routine care, maternity, mental health and cancer cover.
Does SafetyWing cover pre-existing conditions?
No. Both plans exclude them. Essential can cover an acute flare-up after the first 28 days if treated within 24 hours, but chronic and congenital conditions are excluded.
Does SafetyWing cover me in my home country?
Essential covers emergencies in your home country only after the plan has been active for 90 days, for up to 30 days per visit on a monthly plan (15 if your home is the US). Complete has no restriction at home except in the US.
Can I buy SafetyWing after I have left home?
Yes, Nomad Insurance Essential can be bought while you are already abroad. Problems in the first 72 hours must be shown to have started after the purchase.
Who owns SafetyWing and who underwrites it?
SafetyWing designs and sells the plans. Essential is underwritten by SafetyWing Insurance I.I. in Puerto Rico; on Complete the health part is underwritten by VUMI Group, I.I.
Is $100,000 enough for medical evacuation?
It depends on where you are. Costs rise with distance and remoteness, and Essential's USD 100,000 evacuation limit is per lifetime, not per trip. If you spend long periods in remote places, compare plans with higher evacuation limits.
How long do SafetyWing claims take?
SafetyWing says up to 15 business days from submitting a complete claim to reimbursement. Missing documents, especially the medical report, are the most common reason for delays.
